Like
many companies, Snyder Paper Corporation started as a man’s dream. Harry
M. Snyder’s interest in the paper business started in Baltimore,
Maryland. Mr. Snyder was a sales representative with Morgan Paper
Company, a division of U. S. Envelope, manufacturer of toilet tissue and
paper towels.
Mr. Robert H. Todd, a close friend of Mr. Snyder, was part owner of
Spaugh Paper Company located in High Point, North Carolina. Mr. Todd
convinced Mr. Snyder that a paper company would be profitable in
Hickory, North Carolina, for the purpose of serving the industrial users
of paper. Snyder Paper Company of Hickory was incorporated on July 26,
1946. The officers were: Harry M. Snyder, President, R. H. Todd,
Vice-President and J. W. White, Secretary. Board of Directors consisted
of R. H. Todd, P.C. Underdown, J.W. White and Harry M. Snyder. At
first, there were only two employees, Mr. Snyder and Walter M. Hardin,
and the customer’s orders were delivered by a contract carrier for
$100.00 per month. The sales of Snyder Paper Corporation of Hickory for
1946 were approximately $18,000.00.
Harry M. Snyder realized that if a business is to continue to grow, new
product lines must be developed. Snyder Paper Corporation began the
second phase of its product lines by adding a seating division to its
Industrial Paper Division in 1953. This venture resulted from a
relationship established by B. F. Goodrich Company and Snyder Paper
Corporation. The new product was distributed to both the furniture and
bedding industries.
The success of an organization is not possible without capable
leadership. Good leaders recognize that dreams are made into realities
by competent employees. After the death of his son, Harry Snyder, Sr.,
wrote, “There is no doubt in my mind that all of you, who so promptly
and unselfishly accepted the responsibility of carrying on will continue
to do so more successfully than in the past. For this and the
opportunity to be associated with all involved in the development of our
fine company, I am most grateful.”
